I’ve had a few folks ask me if I can re-cane chairs and with some materials in hand, I thought I might give it a try. Alas, I soon found that I lacked the necessary tools to successfully rip out the old cane and add in the new. Instead, I decided to do what I know (upholstery, of

The gorgeous antique wooden cane chair is in great condition. The beautifully arched and curved ladder-back reveals this is a very high quality piece of furniture. The chair is very sturdy and tight considering its apparent age. While the under-side reveals the chair has most likely been refinished and possibly re-caned, the style, joints, and fasteners used in the production of this gorgeous wooden accent chair indicates it has a much older age. The rough oval-shaped nails under the front along with the odd-groove straight head screws, and mortise and tenon joints on the back indicate a production date of sometime during the late 19th century. The bottom of each leg has round metal feet to help protect against the bottoms getting caught on different surfaces thereby putting stress on the bottom section of the chair. While it is hard to be absolutely certain, the chair has the appearance of either Maple or Mahogany. However, the carved rectangular inset in the headrest appears to be burl mahogany. The inset does not appear to be an insert. Hence, it is one piece with the rest of the headrest. Also, the darker tones in the wood appear to be more consistent with Mahogany. According to references, while both Mahogany and Maple wood was used in the production of early furniture, maple was supposedly very hard to work with without hand tools. Hence, the mortise and tenon joints in addition to other rough-cut edges most likely point to Mahogany as it was much easier to work. There are some places that have the appearance of hand-turning and possibly cross-cutting. There are no breaks, cracks, water damages, or repair places on this gorgeous ladder-back cane accent chair. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the chair – mainly in the form of small scratches and/or marks on the outer edge of the seat and near the bottom of the legs. The legs are all firmly attached and connected with virtually no play in the movement of the legs, supports, or footrests. The cane is firmly intact and in great condition. The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous ladder-back cane accent chair are many. The entryway or living area would be enhanced by the addition of this beautiful wooden treasure. Also, the study or bedroom would welcome this beautiful wooden accent chair for its sturdy design and gorgeous antique appearance. In addition, the open sides and low armrests this make this a great side chair for areas with less space to maneuver in such as a vanity area or separated dining room. The collector will appreciate this beautiful wooden cane accent chair for its great condition, sturdy design, apparent age, and gorgeous antique appearance. The gorgeous antique wooden cane chair weighs approximately 156 oz. The beautiful ladder-back cane accent chair measures 33 5/8\

I love going to auctions and bidding on broken things, because I know those are the things that not many others will bid on, so I can get a good deal. Last month, I bought a pair of antique caned chairs at an auction. It appears that someone started the job of recaning them, but never finished. I thought about trying to learn to cane them myself, but I knew the chances of that happening anytime in the near future
