Borge Mogensen Limited Edition Spanish Chair in Green Leather

Borge Mogensen Limited Edition Spanish Chair in Green Leather

In 1958, Børge Mogensen and his family travelled to Spain. In Andalucia he fell in love with an old chair with a wide seat and broad armrests. Once back in Denmark, he created The Spanish Chair. The chair he fell in love with is a traditional type of chair and is very common in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture – from Spain to northern India. Børge Mogensen modernised the design by removing the elaborate carvings, and thus he created his own version with his customary geometrical precision. Yet he retained the most important feature: the broad armrests that give the chair its distinctive character. The broad armrests also serve as a practical place to place a cup or a glass.By designing The Spanish Chair Mogensen proved that he did not need to use steel or plastic to be innovative. Like The Hunting Chair, it is made of oak and butt leather. This gives it a strong, masculine character, and ensures that the chair ages beautifully. The straps allow that the back can be tightened as the leather expands, which means that you can sit securely and comfortably in this chair from day one – and for the rest of your life. *** 60 Year Limited Edition Solid Oak Green Leather

17th C. Spanish Renaissance Friar Chair

17th C. Spanish Renaissance Friar Chair

17th century Spanish Friar’s chair. It is highly styled chair especially for a friar chair. This walnut chair has its original black hide hand tooled leather seat back stretched between two walnut pieces that are the back legs of the chair as well. The leather seat is stretched over wood base with rosette brass nail head trim. What makes this chair stand out among other comparable chairs it has fine carving all over the chair and is less restrained then a chair of that style. The top of the chair features the typical Spanish valute finial. The arms are also highly carved ending with a rounded scroll. The front stretcher has the typical geometric carving influenced by the Moors. The side stretchers are also carved in a pleasing scroll. Rarely do you find a chair with all of this carving. Usually they are simple with carving in one or two areas indicating the exceptional quality of this chair. The chair is in great condition and has typical wear for its age. One of the back wood piece is a little loose but stable. This chair came out of an estate in Pasadena Ca. The family has owned the chair since 1920 when it was bought for them in Spain. At one point the owner of the estate made notes of the history of each piece and tagged them so that the history would be intact. They had a fantastic collection of 17th century Spanish antiques. We also have a baroque hall chair in our store from this same estate. This chair is quite substantial in size. It measures 43.5\
