This is a handcrafted reproduction of an American Civil War Era Folding Chair made of oak. The design and dimensions were taken directly from an original antique manufactured by the E. W. Vaill company. Please reference the accompanying picture taken by Matthew Brady of crew members on the USS Hunchback, a steam-powered gunboat on patrol on the James River in 1864, and you’ll see this style of chair. They were a common piece of utilitarian furniture used by civilians and both militaries – somewhat like today’s “lawn chair”. Like the original, this chair is made of actual 1” stock (not the ¾” stuff common today) and assembled using mortise and tenon joints. The hinging joints are of the period correct rivet and burr method. The turned “stretchers” are oak. Like the original, the back slats are steam bent and it even has the brass accents on the finials and top back slat. There is premium upholstery on the back with the seat being a combination of upholstery backed with heavy cotton canvas duck and melded together with sewn edge binding. And just like the original, the rear of the back rest is covered with cotton fabric and border trim. The finish is a rosewood traditional oil stain with a hand rubbed tung oil top coat. This finish is fade resistant and becomes even more beautiful with age. This a great chair for the re-enactor or history buff and also makes a unique accent piece and conversation starter. There won’t be many of these available so get them when you can. Remember, if you’re going for a correct period impression your items should look NEW – today’s antiques were that period’s Brand New! The approximate overall “open” size is 16 wide x 20 x 28 inches high – folded is 16 wide x 7 x 34 long. Seat height is ~ 15\

This is a Hitchcock chair from the early 1800s (1820-40, pre civil war). The turnings are not machine done and have an dull caved edge to them. These chairs typically have pillow tops also known as bolster tops with slat backs. This chair has all its original parts. I glued every joint. I love the old chairs for they are dense and rubbed smooth from use. This chair has a nice multi layer of stressed paint which has protected it from the ages. The stencil free hand art on this chair is worn but vibrant with gold and aged colors. My best understanding of the art is it was painted around 1910. It is of wild strawberries. The paint looks like it is from this time and it is done well by someone who was not in the mass production of stencil art.
